Prior research on formalized organizational structure and entrepreneurship argues that new firms with formal structure perform better than new firms with less formal structure in dynamic contexts. However, research on teams finds that formal structure leads to poor performance when teams are small, suggesting that the benefits of formal structure for new firms operating in a dynamic environment is contingent on the size of the new firm. In this paper, we examine the moderating effect of firm size on the formalization–new firm performance relationship using a randomized controlled experiment with a sample of 393 new firms founded in Peru during a period of high market dynamism. In contrast to past research on formalization and entrepreneurship in dynamic contexts, we find that small new firms with less formal structure perform better than small new firms with more formal structure.

Ryan Coles,美國(guó)康涅狄格大學(xué)(UConn)商學(xué)院管理與創(chuàng)業(yè)系助理教授,以及康涅狄格大學(xué)商學(xué)院Daigle實(shí)驗(yàn)室創(chuàng)始人和首席科學(xué)家,該實(shí)驗(yàn)室是首個(gè)致力于人工智能和組織研究的大學(xué)研究實(shí)驗(yàn)室。Ryan于美國(guó)康奈爾大學(xué)(Cornell U)獲得管理學(xué)博士,研究興趣包括創(chuàng)業(yè)、技術(shù)商業(yè)化、初創(chuàng)企業(yè)國(guó)際化、制度理論、不平等與分層、新興市場(chǎng)與技術(shù)、機(jī)器學(xué)習(xí)與人工智能等。其研究以其理論創(chuàng)新和方法嚴(yán)謹(jǐn)而著稱,已于Organization Science和Management Decision等高水平期刊發(fā)表多篇文章。研究成果多次被國(guó)際學(xué)術(shù)會(huì)議邀請(qǐng)做報(bào)告,比如美國(guó)管理學(xué)會(huì)年會(huì)(AOM)、戰(zhàn)略管理學(xué)會(huì)(SMS)和INSEAD創(chuàng)業(yè)會(huì)議等,連續(xù)兩年獲得美國(guó)管理學(xué)會(huì)年會(huì)最佳論文(2022/2023)。此外,Ryan一直探索創(chuàng)業(yè)精神的社會(huì)基礎(chǔ),與實(shí)驗(yàn)室成員提出“統(tǒng)一制度主義”(Unified Institutionalism),被著名社會(huì)學(xué)家霍華德·艾爾德里奇稱為“理論上的奇跡”。Ryan還積極推動(dòng)研究成果商業(yè)化,2023年前三季度,Daigle實(shí)驗(yàn)室團(tuán)隊(duì)共啟動(dòng)了八個(gè)初創(chuàng)項(xiàng)目,總計(jì)估值變化高達(dá)26.3億美元。
